The Single Leg RDL is fundamental. It is the base exercise for a lot of variations that I use to train unilateral strength in the lower body. That said, there are plenty of athletes that struggle with balance in the exercise, and it could be that they're not shifting their weight appropriately to start the lift.

If you're not loading the hip, or the musculature there isn't strong enough to take the load, a common fault you'll see is the hips stacking. The brain is placing one hip on top of the other for balance, instead of suspending one from the other.

Shifting your weight can be just the thing to help you to avoid this fault. This video was posted a long time ago, but it still hits today as I watch athletes shy away from loading the outside of the hip in these unilateral variations.
