In strongman, every fraction of a second counts. That is why split times are a valuable tool, especially in a five-stone series. They create a clearer ranking system, prevent messy point distributions, and help break ties fairly.

Imagine a stone loading event where two athletes finish four out of five stones but fail the last one. If no split times are recorded, they both get the same score, meaning they split the points for those placements. This can cause huge scoring gaps later in the competition.

Now take that same event but with split times. Athlete A may have loaded their fourth stone in 23.5 seconds, while Athlete B did it in 24.1 seconds and Athlete C in 25.7 seconds. With split times, their placements are ranked properly without shared points.

But there is a downside. If an athlete is the only one to finish the series while the rest of the field only gets three stones or fewer, split times could minimize their advantage. Instead of a major point gap between first and second, they may only gain one point, despite finishing the entire series. This can make a dominant event performance feel undervalued.

That said, I still prefer to use split times because these outliers are rare. When they do happen, it is usually in just one event, whereas ties are far more common across an entire competition. Without split times, those ties could overshadow multiple events, making the overall scoring even messier.

If you are competing in or organizing an event, consider how split times can improve scoring accuracy. A fairer system keeps the competition as objective as possible and ensures every effort counts.
