n strongman, every second counts. But trying to rush the pick on a yoke or farmer's carry without first securing the implement is a mistake that costs more than it saves.

It is the same idea as an old football saying. Make sure you catch the ball before you start to run with it. If you do not secure possession first, nothing else matters.

With yoke and farmer's carries, the pick is where everything starts. If the weight is not fully controlled before you start moving, you waste energy trying to stabilize it on the fly. That leads to more wobbling, more corrections, and more risk of dropping the implement or losing speed.

Some athletes try to combine the pick and first step into one motion to save time. The problem is that if the pick is sloppy, the whole run suffers. A quick start does not matter if you have to slow down to recover bad positioning.

Taking a fraction of a second to lock in the pick gives you a smoother, more controlled carry. That stability lets you move faster in the long run because you are not fighting instability with every step.

The risk of rushing does not outweigh the reward. Secure the pick, then move.
