Making technical changes has to be strategic. Sometimes you're better off leaving technique as it is if the timing isn't right.
New technique can take a little while to really set in and feel like it's natural for an athlete to do. When they first try the change, it feels weird and unnatural because it goes against what they've been training to do up until that point.
They're arguing with the subconscious motor pattern. Violating their muscle memory.
Some athletes can make the change quickly but for others it can take weeks to get it locked down. If that is the case, making the change to close to a contest can spell disaster. They'll start feeling normal right as it's time to peak, and if the technical change ultimately didn't benefit the athlete, they're stuck trying to do something that left them worse off with no time to fix it.
Sometimes I'll see errors being made, and just let them continue to be made, planning to make the correction after the contest. If they're inefficiencies, and not dramatically increasing the injury risk, then making the change at the wrong time could do more harm than good.
