“Pilates Reformer Exercises for Fall Risk Reduction in Older Adults” A randomised controlled trial published in Bodywork and Movement Therapies (2017) by Margaret Roller et al.
Dr. Margaret Roller is a respected researcher in movement science, and this study is one of the most powerful pieces of evidence we have for Pilates as a tool for fall prevention.
What did they test?
Over 10 weeks, participants took just one Pilates Reformer class per week while researchers measured:
✅ Balance & equilibrium
✅ Range of motion in ankles and hips
✅ Fear of falling (psychosocial assessment)
The Results? Game-Changing.
After just 10 sessions, the study showed:
✔️ Improved balance & range of motion
✔️ Significant reduction in fall risk
✔️ Increased confidence & participation in daily life

Some of my own hypothesis as a clinician as to why this was so successful - When older adults experience positive movement experiences that exceed their expectations, everything shifts:
