We about ran out of ways to entertain one another having been occupying in a box blind since 7pm the night before. Little spurts of humor kept our spirits high as we joked about taking shifts to doze off, often catching ourselves doing so at the same time, for multiple times now.

1:35 p.m.

Oinks in the background*

Tristan - "Did you hear that??"

As he froze still in his office chair, I immediately followed his actions in order muffle all noises that weren't as important in the moment. My head turns to the feeder, and my eyes widened.

Tommy - "PIGS. Tristan, pigs!"

Tristan - "Dude, quit playing around.."

My phone makes a thud on the wood floor as I reach for the rifle. Tristan now following my lead. We slid the plexi glass windows upwards, and screwed them down above their stops. My rifle makes it out the window as Tristan sets his camera on the window sill, quickly and silently followed by his rifle.

On the drive down, we talked about the potential of this moment. We would shoot our own lanes (left and right) and it would be on the count of three. The hogs swarmed in. There must have been Over 8 good size sows and a cluster of 4 to 6 piglets. They fed around the feeder moving quickly, weaving in and out. I made my decision on the larger red sow, black spots. Tristan wasn't picky.

Our game plan went out the window as more swarmed in. The red sow gave me two opportunities, that were there and gone. Adding another shooter made the scenario more stressful. We can either come out with multiple hogs or one. There were a ton of interruptions with the shot countdown as the hogs moved in and out of the visible feeding area. Four minutes into finding the perfect shot for the both of us, I can sense the frustration Tristan felt with me. I picked out a large black sow, and it was 3, 2, 1 Lights Out!

Two hogs hit the dirt. I eject and bolt in another round as Tristan fires 2 more rounds at the hogs dispersing in the the thick undergrowth. The area silences, not a bird, nor a squirrel heard. We broke into celebration!

Almost blew one of the biggest moments for us. A huge shout out to Brother, Lo Fong, for inviting us to revisit his property. Its been a few years since we have last visited. The trail cam pics that I receive annually, this time of year makes it tough not to. Glad we got to spend a few days catching up on life. This is the Texas experience I've been waiting for.

Something I've always wanted to get into was target shooting, whether that be indoor or 3D shooting
It hasn't been anything too serious, just a bunch of friends and family in a "league" bullsh*tting around and shooting for fun. But I see it as my first step into a new environment and a way for me to keep shooting outside of hunting season

Thank you to for inviting me (us) to shoot alongside him and his friends

Mission: Ozark Smallie

The few white river rocks mixed in with the others of the rock river bed, acted as reflectors as we waded up and down river with our head lamps on. I admit, we were a tad late to pre-fishing, but the stop at the Bass Pro Shop Headquarters in Springfield, MO would do us well in this last second, idea of a trip. It's true what they say about the Elk River, it's clear as glass and with that, all depth conception was thrown off. Go a few steps and you might be chest deep. A few steps another way and your ankle deep. Being able to see the river bottom no matter what depth, really made us pay attention to where we were stepping. We hit multiple public access points from the mouth of the river, to near the Oklahoma border, before calling it a night.

Started off the morning early, but spent a good chunk of it checking out campgrounds, resorts, anywhere that we could gain access to fish a small part of the river or just to park the pickup. Phone calls were met with a lot of rejection and/or a ridiculously high prices to gain access to their part of the river. Persistence paid off, as the last place on our list checked out and we had a small part of the river to ourselves.

Gravel areas, with no huge structures to hang up on, were my favorite, as I presented variations of Ned Rigging to pull a few Largemouth. Popping and slow dragging a Ned Rig set up at the bottom of river, caused commotion and noise that alerted hungry fish. Later on in the day, the presentation of larger, slow dragging creature baits resembling the profile of a "Crawfish" shined. A few fish later, Tristan struck Bronze, presenting the first Ozark Smallie out of the water. He targeted large rock bottom structure but jig was well set up to bounce off rocks and snags. It's tough to leave the water, but we did so between casts to let our bodies warm up.

Mission Accomplished with at least one Ozark Smallie each. Winter fishing is tough and it isn't highly prioritized in my things to do, but having someone who always wants to try new waters excites my exploring side. Pinned a few fast water areas, and currently clearing out some of the spring/summer for more River Smallie action.

Almost the end of archery season, hopefully everyone has punched their tags and freezers full. It's time to start thinking ahead and prepping for September. It's going to come sooner than we expect.

We've got a few new shooters this year that are wanting to try it out. Hopefully, they stick with it!

Tim's Dirty 30

Birthday Boy kicks off the Tournament with the first fish of the season (Birthday Fish) at Lillie's Landing Resort & Marina. Taneycomo truly kicked our butts. Usually we give the fly fisherman a good run for their money, but this Premier Trout Fishery is definitely geared for the fly-fishing purists. We were able to adapt from fishing deep pools with larger swimbaits, jerkbaits, and crankbaits, to shallow stream flows throwing our smallest of presentations. Muck Boots to the very brim of water as we waded the shallow waters and mimicked fly fishing with our spinning rods, yielded decent results and we put a few on the board.

The fishing was tough, but the weekend was easy going. Lots of good food, drinks, and even better company as we celebrated Tim's 30th Birthday.

All I Want For Christmas is a dysfunctional Christmas card photo

Merry Christmas from us at ShogunBros!!

Of course when you bring out the .22 rifles, there are no squirrels in sight.

Spent the day exploring the Lamine Conservation Area with intentions of hunting squirrels and scouting new area for archery for next season.

Strategically we split up into 2 groups. Group One (Tom by himself) pushing the bottom of hillside and the other Group Two (Tristan & I) pushing the top of the same hillside. Midway, Tom drops his pack and Tristan is alerted so he scans for movement while Tom calls for the shot. I push forward on a few steps, the squirrel circled, Tristan spots the fluffy red tail and lines up for the shot. BOOM, head shot!

Text book, utilizing each other's movements to move the squirrel around the tree to present a kill shot.

Tip: When hunting solo, you can utilize your day pack for similar results. Throw your pack to the side the squirrel is on and it should circle. Be ready and it should present a shot opportunity.

The Missouri 2024 archery season may have been my most successful and yet difficult season I've had so far

Here's a photo dump of everything that I found "aestheticly" pleasing that I have witnessed

The Ground Blind (from my previous post) did its intended job. Set towards the bottom of a creek bed where all the fingers of the valleys meet, it allows a 300 angle view (minus the tree I lean on) and offers a 100+ yards of coverage in deep timber in each direction. Designed to test one's discomfort level, the hard and cold ground had all of my senses alert and staying awake was an easy task, as I kept shifting cheek to cheek, to keep my legs from falling asleep.

I gave in around 9:15 am and stood up to stretch. Just then, a glimpse of movement from midway down the side of the valley in front of me and instinctively I reached for the rifle I had leaned up against my backrest tree. I dropped to get low with the blind knowing it likely was too late, connecting my left knee with my left elbow to raise my rifle, and soon as the crosshairs were on him, we stared each other down through the lense, now leveled. He was in a hurry, and I knew I had to be in an even more of a hurry to make the decision, but I was missing one critical piece of information. He turns his head to reroute, I count, one-two-three (betting for damn sure he had a set of browtines) and three obnoxious attempts later to try and stop him, I had him at a dead stop, broadside, not 20 yards from where he last stood and squeezed.

The smoke cleared, he headed up the very same hillside he came, clearing the top and cutting right. "I missed.." were the first words I muttered as I plopped down in the blind. Gave it about 20 min. The suspense was killing me, I decided to get up and look for blood. Trying to find signs of blood and the initial impact sight in a fast pace scenario with no luck, worsened the feeling. Things happened quickly, my mind didnt even have time to mark where he stood.

I was 15 yards off my mark of impact. The leaves were painted red, and the 180 grain Nosler Accubond left a path I soon followed up the same direction he went. I've been on such a long losing streak, I almost forgot how it felt to walk up and claim a harvest at the end of blood trail.

Rut Prediction: We're in the beginning stages. I think the upcoming weekend we will see peak rut activity and more deer down.

Big Buck Down!

This weekend, starting Saturday, was the Missouri Deer Rifle Opener, and like clockwork, I was able to harvest this buck on Friday, just before rifle season started. It seems to be a recurring thing because I did the exact same thing last year haha

SWIPE 👉 To see the full pass through carnage (post sharpening).

Meat in the freezer is my focus for this year. Realizing that you can never start too early prepping for elk season, I'd pre planned to bag as much meat as possible to fuel my physical health. This 2024 whitetail season has been extra warm making it difficult to even see deer with the lows typically in the mid 40s and the highs reaching above the 60s. I'm very thankful and blessed to have crossed paths with this healthy doe. She will greatly fuel my body to reach beyond what I've ever experienced. First a 5k, then a marathon, and finally, a bull elk.

Not every day do you get 2 shots at the same deer. Above are two different entrance holes on a quartering away deer. The first shot with the Nap Killzone would have done the job, but with it being my first time shooting a mechanic broadhead, I questioned if the blades deployed or not. The doe ran and stopped at 50 yds, and I sent the Magnus at her just to be safe.

A slight chilled morning and hoping to see some deer come around, but nope, this is what I see, A CAT! I got excited hearing something coming towards my way, and I'm looking and looking to see if it pop up, and when I did see it, it wasn't a deer but a black panther lol. I see squirrels, groundhog, birds, raccoons, and turkey, but a cat is a first for me!

10/15/2024

When the weather peak is 90° and a slight breeze starts blowing and not seeing no deer, it's a sad morning. Waiting to see any deer pop up, but then you look and see a flock of hen turkey just enjoying the sun and vibing to this nice weather is also cool to see. Maybe this week with this cold weather will bring in the deer and maybe some luck for me to shoot one.

10/08/2024

Tim's first weekend back since his Colorado Mule Deer hunt concluded with 90 degree highs, 0 deer movement, and a warm welcome from the groundhogs. This is the result and the damage that was done.

Surprise

I wish I got more pictures with her, but I got her in the evening, and I was rushing to pick her up in the dark

She ain't much, but she's honest work. First deer of the season. After spending most the winter time and spring "fixing" my target panic, I finally was able to execute and harvest a deer. Beforehand I'd almost "black out" when I drew back and wouldn't ever be able to execute a good shot but I think it's working

Here's to a good season for everyone 🍻 stay safe and shoot straight
