OPINION: Badminton is popular yet underappreciated
By Rian Gabriel B. Fuentes
Played by two or four players where they generate a powerful smash that can reach 300 km/h, react in less than half a second, and have a cardiovascular strength to run 6-8 kilometers during a single game. Did badminton cross your mind? Probably, as Badminton Warehouse (n.d.) claims that it is the second most played sport in the world after soccer—having 220 million players annually. Yet, it is disheartening that most players only have a vague understanding of its competitive nature. With the public seeing it as an easy game, there are three reasons why this type of mindset was formed over time: cultural perception, lack of media coverage, and accessibility.
Badminton is highly popular in Eastern countries like China and Japan, as well as in the European nation of Denmark. However, cultural perceptions significantly influence its underappreciation. Chang (2016) asserts that western people often perceive the sport as weak compared to tennis and other mainstream sports. Additionally, in countries like the Philippines, badminton is often seen as weak and girly due to its non-contact nature, with boys encouraged to play basketball or soccer and girls volleyball, reflecting gender stratification in sports culture.
Badminton’s competitive side is unfamiliar to many due to limited media coverage. Platforms like BWF (Badminton World Federarion) TV and Badminton Europe have low engagement, with only 3.13 million and 134 thousand subscribers, compared to the NBA’s (National Basketball Association) 22 million and FIFA’s (Federation Internationale de Football Association) 21.3 million. In the Philippines, badminton is rarely televised, with basketball and volleyball prioritized due to higher viewer interest and advertising potential. This lack of exposure hampers efforts to shift the public perception of badminton as a serious and competitive sport.
Badminton's simplicity, needing only a shuttlecock, rackets, and an optional net, often leads to its misperception as an easy, recreational activity rather than a demanding sport. This casual view can result in the sport being deprioritized in schools, where early grassroots training should begin. Starting players at ages 7-8 promotes fitness and health (Medium, 2018). Excessive accessibility can undermine its image as a serious, skillful sport.
The status of badminton is slowly improving, with Yonex and Li-Ning investing in building more equipment factories. Additionally, the growing popularity is leading some parents to enroll their children early to develop skills, enhancing flexibility, agility, and responsiveness (Dogra, 2021). However, unless badminton is viewed as a serious sport rather than a leisure activity, skill development will lag, and only its popularity will advance.
As a former varsity badminton player, I find it frustrating that, despite its popularity among young people, the sport is often undervalued. Many players don't know the history, rules, or technical aspects, partly because badminton is seen as a "weak" sport due to its non-contact nature and lack of media presence. To address this, we need to shift our mindset and focus on strengthening the sport's grassroots through school competitions and early-age training. Without this change, badminton risks being perceived only as a leisure activity, which could hinder the development of future talent. Talent will not prevail, only its fame.

Dear member,
Over the past few days, I have sent out a few messages regarding our use of the Glenwood center. As of this morning, Thursday October 3rd 2024, we have just finalized the new contract with the city. Please see below for our new badminton schedule:
During off-season (Apr 1 - Nov 31):
Leonard Center:
Mondays: 6:30-8:45 PM
Fridays: 6:30-8:45 PM
1st & 3rd Saturdays: 1:45-4:45 PM
Gym unavailable from Oct 17 - Nov 3 for early voting
Glenwood Center:
Tuesdays: 6:30-8:45 PM
Thursdays: 6:30-8:45 PM
2nd & 4th Saturdays: 1:45-4:45 PM
During basketball season (Dec 1 - Mar 31):
Leonard Center:
Every Saturday: 1:45-4:45 PM
Glenwood Center:
Gym unavailable
This new schedule is effective today Oct. 3rd. Therefore, after we finish setting up the nets at Glenwood today, we can begin play at the new center. Also keep in mind that our times have changed at Leonard from 6:30-8:45 PM on Mondays and Fridays and from 1:45-4:45 PM on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays. This Saturday will be at Leonard and next Saturday we will be playing at Glenwood.
Unfortunately, the city could only accomodate us on Saturdays during basketball season. We went back and forth with them for 4-5 months over this issue and brought it all the way up the chain of command at Parks & Rec. As basketball season approaches, we will inquire about getting an extra day. Once they have finalized their basketball schedule, we will find out if they can give us Mondays back at Leonard.
In other news, I will be taking over the day to day operations of GBC as Michel is focusing his energy on a new project to open a dedicated badmintion/pickleball facility in the Triad area, with a launch date in the first quarter of 2025. I want to thank Michel for the many years he has selflessly managed GBC and ensured that we have access to play badminton in the Triad area. Michel will still be around to assist with shuttles and stringing, but he is phasing out his responsibility over management of GBC.
Moving forward, I would like to re-establish a board of directors help manage different aspects of GBC. If you are interested in helping out please come see me and lets talk. As of right now, we could use a few active members to help with making tags, collecting membership payments, and orienting new players that want to join and play at GBC. In addition, I would like to have a few people that are savy with money-management to serve as treasurers for the club. Volunteering on the board of directors will pay for your yearly membership, so you will not need to pay the membership fee.
In light of the new agreement with the city, I would like to maintain full transparency about the finances of the club. Currently, club funds are nearing zero. In the new contract, we are being charged a yearly facility fee for both locations, and we are being required to maintain liability insurance to cover our entire group. In light of these new operating expenses, the membership fees for 2025 will be $100/year/person. For ages 18 and under, the fee will be $75/year/person. We will begin collecting fees for 2025 starting on Nov 1st. However, if you would like to go ahead and pay to get the updated tag, then feel free to do so.
Best regards,
John Doss

Dear member,
I had the confirmation from the Leonard center personal that this coming Monday, September 30th 2024, will be the last day of Summer schedule.
So, on Monday the play session will go until 9:30PM.
On Tuesday October 1st 2024, the Fall/Winter will take place. From now on, the center will close @ 9PM on weekdays.
This is the tentative schedule starting October 1st:
- Monday 6:30PM until 8:45PM @ Leonard center
- Tuesday 6:30PM until 8:45PM @ Glenwood center
- Thursday 6:30PM until 8:45PM @ Glenwood center
- Friday 6:30PM until 8:45PM @ Leonard center
- Saturday 1:45PM until 4:45PM, 1st and 3rd @ Leonard center 2nd and 4th @ Glenwood center
As I mentioned earlier, the gym @ Glenwood needs to be set up for badminton.
Lines has to be put down to delimiter the courts (there will be space for 3 courts), and nets needs to be tied together, like at Leonard.
Hooks have been put in place inside the gym.
The faster we can set the gym up, the faster we can start playing @ Glenwood.
If you are able to come help, please come @ the Glenwood center on Tuesday @ 6:30PM.
John will be supervising the project.
Thank you,
Michel.
