The Joyous Tradition of Kagami Biraki: Celebrating Life's Milestones in Japan — TOKI 01/11/2025

Today at 12:00 p.m. our annual tradition of 'kagami biraki' (opening the mirror)is combined with 'hatsu geiko' (First training)
We combine several traditions at our dojo and today we will also be making mochi the traditional way!

Both are auspicious events in Japan and to a lesser degree, Okinawa.
These ceremonies signify new beginnings and opportunities and are held throughout Japan and Okinawa in Dojo in January, and auspicious occasions throughout the year.

More on Goshukan-Ryu Kobudo.

While our lineage is Taira Shinken's Ryukyu Kobudo, we do not follow the curriculum of a specific kobudo organization; instead the Goshukan-Ryu practices a curated collection of fundamental kata with accompanying applications and kumi series of partner drills.
There are many kata and weapons (both Okinawan and Chinese) that are practiced in addition to core curriculum, but are not required for advancement.

Goshukan-Ryu Kobudo:

• Shushi no Kon Sho
• Maezato no Tekko
• Maezato no Nunchaku
• Hamahiga no Tonfa
• Shushi no Kon Dai
• Hamahiga no Sai
• Sakugawa no Kon
• Chatan Yara no Sai
• Shokawa no k**a
• Tawada no Sai
• Kanigawa no Tinbe
