Happy Motivational Monday and World Health Day!
Today, it seems natural to talk about mental health, and I thought this is a great quote to start off with.
Many times, in a awful way, we discover that our greatest enemy is ourselves. We may get discouraged, and it may create a realm in which negative self-talk blooms. But I want you to remember, our circumstances do not define us. What truly defines us is how we react to these negative occurrences.
Let's try an example.
You get up and see dim light peeking through your curtains.
You go to wash your face and the cold water makes you shiver.
You go to make some coffee and the coffee beans and water are empty so you fill them up.
These are examples of the facts surrounding your morning. However I am going to guess that most of you had a negative reaction to these facts. It was early, the cold water made you cold, the lack of coffee beans mad you grumble.
What if your reaction was this: You woke up to see the light and realized that you could have a quiet house to yourself. You splashed water on your face and felt invigorated. The coffee pot was ready for fresh beans and fresh water and you made yourself a delicious cup of coffee.
That second scenario makes me feel ready for my day! the "facts" didn't change, just our perception of them. Control how your mind perceives your surroundings, and you will find strength.
Have you turned a situation around simply by changing your mindset?

What are a few thing that Self-Control can help you with? Focusing on what you can control is a great beginning to self-control

Happy Motivational Monday!
I hope this month's examination of Integrity has been helpful. When we look at the qualities of a good student, these values often transfer well from one sport to another. But I find them to be particularly important in martial arts when your biggest challenge may be commanding yourself.
Integrity, whether sown for yourself or for others, is a foundational element, being the bedrock of you and how you will behave. Demonstrating integrity starts, of course, with yourself. Being true to yourself, speaking the truth, and acting with integrity are all the bedrock on which you will build your foundations.
"To thine own self be true." -Shakespeare ("Hamlet", Spoken by Polonius to Laertes)

The “four Cs”: of Integrity are: commitment, congruence, consistency and coherence.
As we close out the month of March-what is the one thing you learned about integrity?

This powerful quote is often at the foundation of our understanding of the word "Integrity". It's one of the first things someone will say when we ask for the definition.
To act with integrity not only means to do the right thing when it is asked of you, but to do the right thing all the time, regardless of who is around you. To a child, the concept might be explained by saying "What would you do if your mom was watching you?". As an adult, we may swear on a bible and say "So help me God."
This quote implies that our sense of morality might change based on who is with us, While peer pressure is a huge factor, what does it say about us if we were to act differently on our own? Is our morality so flimsy a thing?
How we act, how we behave, what we think is right and wrong, those are our own views of morality. In many ways, they shouldn't vary that much. Society sets rules and laws for how we should behave. Your community also sets these expectations.
In our dojang, we have expectations. We take our shoes off and we bow when we step onto the mat. When we see our Grand Master, we bow and say "Hello Ma'am!'. When we see someone who outranks us or is older than us, we bow and say "Hello!" to show them respect.
We SHOULD always do this. But sometimes we may be tired, or feel lazy, or may not be acting like a 10 kid. What then? That's where a sense of Integrity comes in. It means using your sense of right and wrong to guide you, no matter who is around, or how you may feel that day. It means setting the example. It means BEING the example.
It means doing the right thing. Period.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I searched specifically for an Irish quote about integrity, and this one stood out. This proverb focuses on the importance to speak and communicate honestly, and that in turn contributes to our ideas about Integrity.
There are a number of sayings that reflect our want to believe what people say.
"You can take me at my word."
"My word is my bond."
“People with integrity do what they say they are going to do. Others have excuses.” -Dr. Laura Schlessinger
“Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.” - Miguel Angel Ruiz
But this Irish proverb has a little more oomph.
Do what you say, and say what you mean. Show YOUR Integrity.

Pull our those bootcut jeans and your crimper!
It's National Retro Day!
Stay groovy, Friends!!

You may have heard the adage that forgiveness is not for the forgiven, that it is for the forgiver. I think the same can be said of Compassion.
When we offer compassion, we often gloss over others imperfections, allowing them to be themselves and not passing judgement. When we do this for others, it can allow us to show our own failings and shortcomings the same loving kindness. It's part of the reason that we feel seen when someone is vulnerable with us about their own struggles.
That's what compassion does. The next time you offer someone a kind word, I want you to remember to also do that for yourself.
"Oh, It's so hard to get everything done! No one expects you to be perfect."- Remember to forgive yourself for your imperfections.
"Mama, you are doing a great job."- Remember to praise yourself.
"I love seeing you out there on the mat trying so hard! Don't give up!"- Remember to praise yourself and your own perseverance.
What is a word of encouragement that YOU need to hear? Tell someone, and then tell yourself.

Happy President's Day!

Compassion isn't only a luxury that we afford others. Compassion should be practiced first and foremost to ourselves. Because compassion is a gift for others, and even more so, a gift for ourselves.
Let's break it down. Face it, it takes a lot of energy to be angry. It takes a lot to be mean and unkind, but sometimes we feel that we have been wronged or offended. We may feel it in our hearts. You can probably imagine this feeling right now. It feels tight, it feels wrong. It makes you clench your jaw.
Now imagine that you have forgiven someone. Maybe you aren't forgiving their actions, but you have made a conscious decision to let go of the anger, maybe to just let go, whether they disserve it or not. Who is that forgiveness for?
Answer- YOU.
Forgiving is for you. It's to allow you to gain closure, to release the anger and the hurt, to not allow them to hurt you again, so that you can keep them at arms distance. Can you feel that in your heart? It feels lighter, happier.
Re-read these words. And give yourself some compassion.

Douglas MacArthur was a top commander, serving during WWI, WWII and the Korean War. He served the US in a variety of military positions, and even served on the Olympic Committee.
Here he reminds us that compassion is a strength.
Compassion is not simply listening to people, but hearing them with your heart. In many ways, it is easy to be mean. To offer kindness takes a lot more self-awareness and heart. Compassion is not easy. It often means being uncomfortable, feeling other's pain and agitation. But on the other person's side, imagine the relief of being seen, of being heard.
As we work with one another in taekwondo, let us remember to offer compassion as we learn together. Self-defense can be scary, and we should try to be gently with one another. When someone is struggling to learn a form, let us lead with compassion and not judgement. this is part of the reason Praise- Challenge- Praise works so well. Praising the effort opens our hearts to hear the challenge and accept what we have done well, but also what we need to work on.
This month, listen with your heart.
