PSA: It’s that time of year again when students transition into secondary education! This important phase requires a carefully planned transition meeting, particularly for those with IEPs.
Transition meetings are crucial in ensuring students’ success from elementary to junior high and junior high to high school. These meetings are not just brief discussions about selecting classes, only available when it is convenient for the school; they are comprehensive meetings designed to facilitate a smooth transition for students with IEPs.
During the transition meeting, parents, teachers, special education professionals, and the student collaborate to assess the student’s strengths, needs, and preferences. This meeting typically involves discussing the student’s academic goals, support services required, and potential pathways for post-secondary education or vocational training.
By addressing these essential elements, the transition meeting aims to create a tailored plan that supports the student's development and prepares them for the challenges of secondary education. Please reach out if you find yourself at this juncture and need assistance navigating these important discussions. I’m here to help you and your student achieve a successful transition!

When we look at social media, we see many adults who lack essential skills and are still learning these things as adults. Late diagnoses of learning disabilities, behavioral issues, ADHD, and autism contribute to a situation where some adults struggle to hold traditional jobs, end up incarcerated, or, in the worst cases, face premature death. It’s VITAL we teach mental toughness and resilience young. It’s key to give children the skills they need to be successful all through life.
When given the skills as a child it’s like riding a bike or skateboarding, kids never forget.
Early identification of eligibility for support is crucial to transferring skills into adult life. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) clearly states that its purpose is to provide a free and appropriate public education that promotes further education, future employment, and independent living. However, the responsibility for skill transference does not fall solely on schools; community resources such as behavioral support programs, counseling, and youth programming also play a vital role.
It is essential that everyone involved understands their role and that schools and homes collaborate effectively to ensure we are raising successful individuals.
This is the true meaning of “No Child Left Behind.”

Today while traveling I was scheduled for a couple meetings. I stopped at a small cafe ordered lunch and set myself up for my meetings. There was a little boy probably about 3 or 4 playing Peekaboo with me from his family’s booth. In that moment I had clarity. It was clear to me as an advocate in not just advocating for the families I serve, I’m also advocating for the future of the kiddos that are not yet in school. I’m advocating for better supports, fidelity, correct service, parental rights to be honored. With data and heart I am out here grinding as an advocate.
