The 98 Colvin Community Bicycle Shop has been robbed, and unfortunately it was a big one. The evidence left behind suggests 2-3 people parked a truck near Nichols School on the other side of the railroad tracks, then proceeded to break through the windows we had already secured on the outside and inside of the building.
They took all of our power tools, 20 bikes that our paid staff and volunteers had worked on this entire winter to be ready to give away this spring, and dozens of new tubes, handlebar grips, lights, and new tires.
We've lost about $8,000 worth of capacity to serve our community.
-
We could really use your financial support to get the Colvin shop back on its feet, able to serve as many people as possible - from the average bike enthusiast, to the individual who is just in need of a stable mode of transportation. Thank you.

Albany sees traffic crashes drop with new speed limit 04/07/2025

Buffalo, and any municipality in NY, can and should lower their speed limit to 25mph. At 30mph, half the people hit by a car will die. That number dramatically decreases at 25 and 20.
Lewiston did it. Albany did it. They're reaping the rewards. Let's demand safer streets of our locally-elected officials today.

Albany sees traffic crashes drop with new speed limit City officials say 25 mph speed limit and school zone cameras are leading to fewer car wrecks in New York's Capital City.

'The Carnage is Intolerable': Rep. Jamie Raskin on Why Bike Safety is Becoming Bipartisan — Streetsblog USA 04/02/2025

Bipartisan Bike Lanes?!
-
"Along with two Republican co-sponsors, Raskin recently re-introduced the Sarah Debbink Langenkamp Act, which will allow state and local communities to fund the construction of bike lanes and other proven safety countermeasures built under the Transportation Alternatives Program using 100 percent federal money, rather than having to scrounge up a 20 percent match they often can't afford.
-
And because that bill would also allow local, regional and metropolitan governments to nominate projects directly — rather than leaving them to the mercy of higher levels of government that might be hostile to biking and walking for ideological reasons — it's vaulted to the top of many advocates' legislative wish lists, while gaining support from conservatives who understand the value of letting communities guide their own road safety efforts."

We've taken a good hard look at the comment section of our posts, and moving forward, we've decided that we agree with the sentiments sometimes expressed to us, those we advocate for, and organizations like ours across the country.

Community plants trees in Buffalo's east side 04/01/2025

As federal funding is taken away from re-tree efforts in diverse communities that need them the most (shouldn't have lost them in the first place), we are proud to press on with our re-tree program in the Delavan/Grider neighborhood in spite of this.
Trees along the street, even on residential streets, were once deemed dangers to drivers because they might just drive right off the road and hit one.... and they were subsequently removed in programs that targeted diverse neighborhoods decades ago.
Thankfully, the value they bring to homes and neighborhoods is once again outweighing concerns over erratic drivers' potential behavior.
East Side neighborhoods have a disproportionately high rate of car crashes, injuries, and deaths despite having a lower population density than neighborhoods with lower crash rates.
- Trees naturally slow down speeding cars because of the narrowed site line they create.
- Trees protect people out walking.
East Side neighborhoods also have higher heart and lung disease rates than the rest of the city due to the Kensington Expressway and lack of tree coverage.
- Trees improve air quality.
- Trees increase property values.
- Trees increase shade that cools the adjacent area and nearby homes.
- They're beautiful. They can increase happiness and lower stress levels.
Every neighborhood, of every racial and ethnic background, of any income level deserves all of these benefits.

Over the last month we as a community have been grieving the loss of Mickey Harmon and Jordan Cellotto. As a Board; we wanted to have a way for the community to process our collective grief in a positive way and also add some beauty and art to the neighborhood.
At the Allentown Association’s lot at the corner of Park & Allen we have installed an A-frame which will serve as a tribute wall for Mickey and Jordan. We invite anyone to leave a picture, a note, a piece of art, a story, or whatever inspires you to remember and honor Mickey and Jordan. We hope this will serve as a meaningful tribute and also bring joy to all who walk in Mickey and Jordan’s footsteps down Allen St.

Slow Down the Most Reckless Drivers - Transportation Alternatives 03/31/2025

On Saturday afternoon, Midwood streets were filled with New Yorkers enjoying the weather — when a super speeder hit and killed a mother and her two young children in the crosswalk.
-
The driver had a suspended license and 22 school zone speed camera and red light camera violations in 2024 alone.
-
Last session, Albany had the opportunity to pass a bill that would have prevented this tragedy. The Speed Limiters for Repeat Offenders Act (S4045/A2299-A) would have put a speed limiter on this driver’s car – which would have stopped them from exceeding the speed limit and saved three lives. But legislators failed to act. We cannot wait another year.

Slow Down the Most Reckless Drivers - Transportation Alternatives We need to pass Speed Limiters for the Most Reckless Drivers now. Intelligent Speed Assistance technology will make our streets safer and ensure that a small number of reckless drivers don't control our public spaces.

We've been working for nearly two decades on this issue, and have received much more comprehensive engagement from NYSDOT than those who are living around the Kensington Expressway. The quality engagement and planning process the GBNRTC was appointed to carry out in Region Central should also be applied to the neighborhoods surrounding Humboldt Parkway. The City of Buffalo can lead the way, as the City of Rochester did, when working with NYSDOT.
Our Executive Directors Justin Booth and Catie Stephenson were on today at 4:30 to discuss this statement and our combined hope for a brighter future in Buffalo, led by the desires of its citizens.
