We have a very special patient in our care - this beautiful juvenile eagle unfortunately has lead poisoning. 🦅

Eagles are scavengers and this young raptor was likely feeding on an animal that had been hunted using lead bullets. Lead can also be present in fish who may have swallowed lead sinkers, but given the time of year we think it may be the former.

This eagle was extremely weak and emaciated upon arrival at Turtle Pond. Once he was hydrated, we slowly worked to introduce food. When stable enough, he was tested for lead poisoning and those tests revealed he had significant levels of lead in his system which likely led to the emaciation. Sadly, lead poisoning can be difficult to overcome, but we are hopeful for this young bird.
